Psalm 105:1-15 [16-41] 42
Exodus 33:1-6
Romans 4:1-12
In his letter to the Romans Paul lifts up Abraham as an example of faith and faithfulness. He talks briefly about works righteousness and God’s grace and suggests that believing is receiving. We are who we are not because of what we do rather because of what God has done. It’s that simple.
Abraham believed and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. He believed in the promises and call of God. He followed God’s lead and direction. He obeyed the call. Did he falter along the way? To be sure, but God forgave him as certainly as God forgives us.
We are who we are by God’s grace, our righteousness comes through Christ’s death and resurrection and our Baptism into those waters and Word. God has claimed us and made us God’s own. The season of Lent calls us back to baptism, back to the beginning, back to the Holy. May we hear the call and, like Abraham, listen and follow with trust and confidence.
